Compare using your own content

For a comparison, open the applications that occupy most of your working time. A spreadsheet with many columns has different requirements from a single text document. Note which areas must remain visible together and what text size stays comfortably readable. Do not choose a larger display solely because a promotional image shows more windows beside one another.

When comparing devices in a shop, pay attention to their display settings. Different scaling can substantially alter the impression. Compare the same content at an appropriate text size where possible. Ask for a demonstration using an ordinary application instead of looking only at full-screen video. For office work, small controls may matter more than an impressive landscape.

Include the available viewing position

Measure from your usual seat to the proposed display surface. Include the stand, which may move the screen towards you. A large monitor still needs a suitable place on the desk. On a shallow top, the intended screen may fill much of your view and require frequent eye and head movements.

Mark its external dimensions with cardboard without balancing a heavy object insecurely. Check whether required papers and a lamp still fit beside it. Include height too: shelving above the desk may restrict a larger display even when its width fits. Housing dimensions are more useful than diagonal measurement for this trial.

Assess resolution and presentation together

Compare the computer's supported connection with the monitor's intended resolution and refresh rate. Also check how your applications look at the proposed scaling. More pixels do not mean that every application automatically appears at the size you want. Different users of shared equipment may prefer different settings.

After testing, record the particular task that works better on the larger device. Perhaps table headings remain visible or two documents fit side by side at a readable size. If the benefit comes only from making text smaller, reconsider the choice. An appropriate size should arrange your content clearly without requiring continual changes to the workstation. Keep a note of the tested settings so that the final setup can reproduce the comparison.
