Count real input tasks for a week

Observe how often you enter longer sequences of numbers. Occasional dates are a different task from entering many spreadsheet values. Note whether you already use the number row confidently or usually reach for the keypad. A compact keyboard changes a familiar routine, so assess more than the width saved.

Check other keys that may move or require an additional function on smaller layouts. Document navigation, deleting and particular shortcuts are part of everyday use. Compare the exact model's layout with your tasks. The word compact does not establish which keys are present.

For numerical work, include the decimal separator and the input method used by your application. Try an amount with decimal places, a negative value and a cell correction using the intended language layout. The label and actual output of a key should agree. Especially when changing computers, an unchecked layout can undermine the benefit of a separate numeric keypad.

Give the recovered space a purpose

Mark the smaller keyboard's dimensions on the desk. Put the mouse beside it and assess movement space. If a tray immediately fills the gap, the change may provide no input benefit. Decide whether the narrower width should help mouse use, handwriting or another specific activity.

A separate numeric keypad can be added when needed. Establish where it sits during number entry and where it goes afterwards. With two wireless devices, include pairing, power and identification of the computer in the routine. An additional small device helps only if it remains easy to find when required.

Compare using a typical file

Complete a manageable task with the proposed arrangement. Enter numbers, correct individual entries and move between cells or text areas. Observe mistakes and searches for less-used keys as well as speed. Some familiarisation is normal, but a frequently needed function that remains awkward is a specific disadvantage.

At shared desks, the layout should be understandable to everyone involved. Identify personal devices and keep unusual settings traceable. Choose the format according to the actual balance of text entry, numerical work and available desk space rather than the desire to show fewer keys in a photograph. If the separate keypad is used for almost every task, compare the complete two-piece arrangement with a full-width keyboard before deciding.
